| Peafowl are one of the most beautiful
and striking birds of all the poultry world. They are extremely elegant
and stately roaming about your grounds. The proud peacock with his
train raised and fully fanned is indeed a sight to behold as he displays
for his less radiant mate. The beautiful feathers that are shed each
summer by the cock have endless uses in crafts, floral arrangements, and
various other applications. Peafowl are easy to raise, being extremely
hardy and able to care for themselves, or adapt well to an aviary
display. A family of Peafowl wandering about your property is most
interesting to watch as the hen and her chicks go about their busy day.
Their stately calls are distinctive and unique to Peafowl alone.
The incubation period for Peafowl eggs is 28 days. They can be incubated under hens (3 to 4 eggs under bantams or 6 to 8 eggs under large hens) or in incubators. With incubators use the instructions for turkeys. The Peahens may be allowed to hatch their own eggs with good success. The Peachicks can be started on Turkey Starter or 30% Game Bird Starter. The chicks start eating quickly. First water given should be warm. Peachicks require slightly warmer temperatures than baby chicks, about 95 degrees to start with. You can tell that Peachicks are comfortable when they lay in a close group with necks stretched out as they sleep. If they peep they are too cool, when they're quiet, they are warm enough. Have your heat source warm enough at one end of the brooder, and have enough room for the chicks to move to the cooler end to seek their own comfort zone. Feed the adults Turkey or Pheasant feed. The addition of whole grains are welcomed and enjoyed by your Peafowl. A simple pen of 12' X 24" will provide a spacious area for a pair or trio of full plumage breeders. Provide a shelter at one end with a high perch for protection from bad weather. |
